This book was written with two purposes in mind. The first is to explore the meaning of success as defined by 14 individuals living in Western Colorado. Each was interviewed separately and for the most part was unaware of who else was being interviewed. Their stories are here, chapter by chapter, in their own words - not mine.
The second purpose is to spotlight the deep value of story telling - without qualification the single best and richest route to learning the heart of a person.
Below are a few quotes from the book.
...he likes to teach. He's chosen it from the beginning... "I just want to be here because I want to be a teacher. And on top of that, I know how to fly an airplane, so show me how to put all that together."
Right at the start of the big bust, Dad started this bank. Three banks in the little town had all gone broke. His bank would take the currency and silver - a lot of silver - and pile it on a table out in the open, behind the tellers. They had a pot bellied stove in the lobby and in the winter the farmers would come in to get warm. But the real reason they were coming in was to make sure there was money in the bank.
I never saw myself as a boss; I saw myself as a member of a team. If you give people the opportunity to be creative and innovative, and give them permission to make good decisions, most times they make good decisions. I simply got out of the way of the talented people and gave them permission to do their thing.
Stories matter and telling stories matters.
"When an old person dies, it's like a library burning down."
