Practice Focus
There are two, and only two, foundational questions in all estate and business planning:
- What will you be leaving behind to your heirs and loves ones?
- What will your heirs and loves ones be receiving from you?
The answer to both questions should be:
Your wealth, and Who you are
The philosophy you will experience and then embrace at this office is that the "you" part is as important, and in most cases far more important, than the "wealth" part. In fact, we consider your personal legacy, the "who you are" part, the cornerstone of any plan that we might help you to design and implement.
Of course, we will help you design a technically, legally effective estate and tax plan that meets both your objective and subjective goals, one that actually will work in meeting your expectations. But included in that design, and as its foundation, will be communication of who you are and where you come from. Sharing that part of your legacy can, and often does, shape the lives of your loved ones and those who follow.
So, you will be expected to engage in conversation with us about your values, where they came from, your thoughts on the meaning of success, and on the important of money. These concepts and others that define who you are will become part of the Wealth and Wisdom that will be passed on through an estate and legacy plan especially designed for you.
This is an exciting approach. It is not the conventional one. But it is what your experience will be if you choose to do your planning with us. Our meetings will include conversations and thinking, plus teaching and learning.
For example, we don't advocate that you leave monetary wealth outright to children and grandchildren who may not be ready or able to appreciate what they have. We'll ask you to explore with us how you believe monetary wealth should be received by particular loved ones. We'll ask you to imagine yourself standing next to your child as she receives her inheritance. How would you want her to receive it? And how is that different from her brother?
